Housebreaking 101 by Johnna Biondi, CPDT-KA

Housebreaking is one of the most crucial skills to teach a puppy, yet lack of proper house training is a leading cause of dogs being surrendered. However, the process is straightforward once you have the correct knowledge and consistency. Over the years, I've trained hundreds of dogs and their owners to successfully housebreak their pups, as long as the entire family is committed.

If your puppy is frequently peeing small amounts, a visit to the vet to rule out any medical issues like bladder infections is essential. Remember, housebreaking success depends entirely on the humans, so 100% consistency from the family is key!

One-on-One Training for Lasting Results

Private training is an effective way to train dogs, especially puppies as young as eight weeks old. I come to your home to work with your dog, tailoring lessons to their specific needs. Most dogs and their owners benefit from private sessions, where I first train the dog and then teach the owners how to continue the training.

Training Without Distractions

In-home training eliminates distractions, allowing puppies and dogs to focus on learning commands and addressing behavioral issues. Once they've mastered the basics, I gradually introduce distractions so they remain responsive in real-world situations. Owners are encouraged to practice daily in short 5-10-minute sessions, which reinforces learning and improves consistency.

Positive Reinforcement Approach

I use classical and operant conditioning methods to create a positive, rewarding experience for dogs. Training should be enjoyable, building confidence in your dog and strengthening the bond between you and your pet.
